United Party Could Be a Haven for Disgruntled NPP Supporters – Dr. Asante Otchere Warns
Political analyst Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere has cautioned that the newly rebranded United Party (UP), led by Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, could become a refuge for dissatisfied members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), especially if internal divisions deepen after the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.
Speaking in an interview on Thursday, October 16, Dr. Asante Otchere said the NPP risks losing significant support if the fierce contest scheduled for January 31 leads to a split within the party.
“If the NPP disintegrates after its presidential primaries, many of those who fall out could join the UP, which is the nearest home for them,” he noted.
He further observed that the NPP’s growing disconnect with young voters, particularly the ‘Gen Z’ population in the Ashanti Region, poses another challenge for the governing party.
“I am well informed that the Gen Z of today, especially in the Ashanti Region, are no longer getting attracted to the NPP, which in itself is another problem they would have to work on,” he explained.
“These people could easily identify with the UP, but what I know is that many are currently moving in groups into the NDC because that is where the attraction seems to be for now. The NPP is at a crossroads, and if they disintegrate, the UP will become a safe haven for such people — a situation that could create more problems for the party.”
Alan Kyerematen, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, resigned from the NPP in 2023 to form the Movement for Change, which he recently rebranded as the United Party.
According to him, the rebranding marks a “new dawn” in Ghanaian politics, aimed at enhancing accountability, deepening the fight against corruption, and offering a credible alternative to the winner-takes-all system that has long dominated Ghana’s governance structure.
