Effutu MP and Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, says while the Minority is not opposed to accountability, it must be pursued within the framework of due process and the rule of law.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News on Thursday, April 10, Afenyo-Markin addressed the recent attempt by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to question Assin South MP Rev. John Ntim Fordjour. He cautioned that the government’s approach should not compromise fairness and justice.
“We are not against accountability,” he emphasized, “but the right procedures must always be followed.”
He noted that Rev. Ntim Fordjour’s case is just one example, adding that several members of the Minority are facing what he described as politically motivated persecution under the pretense of accountability.
Afenyo-Markin condemned the alleged intimidation and threats faced by individuals who speak out on national matters, stressing that such tactics have no place in a democratic society.
He also warned against a slide into vindictive politics, stating that Ghana must not return to the oppressive tendencies of its past military regimes.
Calling on President John Dramani Mahama, Afenyo-Markin urged him to curb the actions of certain aggressive figures within his administration, saying their conduct threatens the country’s democratic foundation.
“We don’t need such hawks in government. The President must call them to order,” he concluded.
