Afenyo-Markin Urges Mahama to Rein In Aggressive Government Elements Amid ‘Suspicious Flight’ Saga

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to restrain certain aggressive elements within his administration, following the failed arrest of Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

In an interview on Joy FM’s Midday News on Thursday, April 10, Afenyo-Markin criticized what he described as intimidation tactics being used against political opponents. He expressed concern over the trauma inflicted on Rev. Fordjour and questioned the government’s approach to dissent.

“The government has given its side. If you oppose the formation of a bipartisan committee or a commission of inquiry, that’s your prerogative as a government. But that doesn’t justify threatening a Member of Parliament or putting him through such an ordeal,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin urged President Mahama to take action and stop these so-called “hawks” in government from further inflaming political tensions. He emphasized that leadership should prioritize national interest and people-centered governance, not the persecution of critics.

He cautioned against returning to an era reminiscent of the PNDC regime, where fear and political suppression were commonplace.

“Four years may feel distant, but it’s closer than we think. As a political class, we must break this cycle of retribution and focus on meaningful governance that benefits the people,” he stressed.

The Minority Leader also hinted at alleged behind-the-scenes moves targeting the Chief Justice and other prominent figures, asserting that the Minority is aware of such plans and will respond in due course.
